Te Tiriti Kōrero was launched on Waitangi Day 2022. It raises the mana and seeks action for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the founding document of Aotearoa-New Zealand. These podcasts are collections of knowledge, lived-experience and research that highlight Kaupapa Māori practitioners.
To accompany these podcasts, we have gathered Te Tiriti resources to help you put Te Tiriti into action. These resources will support our sectors to become dynamic Tiriti partners. To add your own resources to this kete, please email us.

Te Tiriti Kōrero with Dr. Chelsea Grootveld – “Our mokopuna don’t have time for us to muck around.”
Chelsea is Ngāi Tai, Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau a Apanui, Whakatōhea and Tuhourangi. She is passionate about whānau centred and whānau led education, health and wellbeing. In this conversation, Chelsea shares her journey of deepening her political awareness in Te Ao Māori and how Te Tiriti is a critical part of her mahi as a kaupapa Māori evaluator.
Te Tiriti Kōrero with Dr Kathie Irwin – “When you take a critical analysis view, a kaupapa Māori view, you don’t start with the individual.”
Dr Kathie Irwin MNZM, PHD, MInstD is a third generation Māori, woman and educator. This interview outlines how public service and social justice are deeply embedded in her bloodlines. Her passion inspires her to contribute to nation building in innovative and creative ways that are framed by Sir Apirana Ngata’s whakatauākī, “E tipu, e rea”.
Te Tiriti Kōrero with Mike Smith – “We have to invest in the vision of all peoples in this country.”
Mike Smith (Ngāti Kahu, Ngāpuhi) is an educationalist and has spent the last 40 years focussed on taking action where it matters. Mike has used his love for his community and the Taiao to advocate for the health and wellbeing of Papatūānuku, highlighting the irreversible impacts of climate change on indigenous communities. In this interview, Mike shares the impact his Mother had on his life, especially in reminding him of his identity and his tūpuna who were original signatories to Te Tiriti.
Te Tiriti Kōrero with Ali Hamlin-Paenga – “We do not need others to be Māori for us.”
Ali Hamlin, the Kaihautū – CEO of Ngati Kahungunu Community Services, provides her insights into how Te Tiriti informs her practice when advocating for equity and fair outcomes for whānau. She wants to ensure that whānau, no matter where they might be in life, have their mana intact, that they have the power and decision-making over their own lives.

- Network Waitangi Ōtautahi (NWŌ) – While Ōtautahi-based, NWŌ works nationwide by invitation and networks widely to support a multicultural Treaty-based future for all of us. They offer mentoring and formal learning opportunities to institutions, organisations and groups along with a wide range of open access on-line educational resources.
- The Treaty of Waitangi and School Governance: Kei tua atu o te matapaki kōrero ko te mahi, NZ Schools Trustees Association – To support boards to make decisions that support Māori learners to enjoy and achieve education success, as Māori, NZSTA has developed a set of resources and video clips. The resources are focused on enabling trustees to better understand the Treaty and emphasise the responsibility boards have in ensuring that the implications, obligations and spirit of the Treaty are implemented and upheld.
- Researchers’ reflections on Treaty application in community organisations – As part of the Treaty Application in Community Organisations research project, a small group of social science researchers, all engaged in research and community action in relation to Tangata Whenua – Tangata Tiriti relationships, were asked to provide a brief response to the question: ‘From your research in relation to Te Tiriti, what is the most significant idea of relevance to Treaty application in community organisations?’

Tangata Tiriti trainers and networks
- Groundwork works alongside organisations wishing to improve their understanding and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. They are invested in creating systemic change and addressing systemic injustice and work with organisations that are ready to take on the challenge of organisational transformation based on Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Treaty Education help people to address the why – why the Treaty is relevant and important, personally and professionally. This is addressed through a workshop process, which starts with the who (relationships) and moves through to making the Treaty real in our places of work and lives.
- Network Waitangi are an independent, voluntary, community education group who run facilitated Treaty and anti-racism workshops. They use experienced Pākehā facilitators and work with participants to create a safe environment to enable full and free discussion on the issues raised in the workshops.
