The 2021 New Zealand Cause Report is a reference resource for Aotearoa New Zealand’s multidimensional charitable and broader for-purpose sector, and is a follow on from the 2017 Cause Report. This is one of the few pieces of research that takes an in-depth sector wide view. It provides an analysis of the environment in which charities and other not-for-profit organisations operate, covering the macro as well as the detail of 19 cause areas. It also comments on the impact of the covid disruptions on the sector in 2020-21.

The for-purpose sector is worth $12.1b – and contributes 4.2% NZ’s total GDP (2018), including $4.0b volunteer labour. In comparison, the primary industry sector contributed 7%. In relative terms the sector is on par with the size of Agriculture industry and close to the size of the Retail trade and Transport, postal, and warehousing industries. The sector is significant.
