Description: In this presentation, Sidney will share how data and innovative technologies (i.e., artificial intelligence) can be used effectively to support ethnic, migrant, and refugee communities in Aotearoa (New Zealand) particularly those who intersect multiple marginalization in our society. He will share his experience supporting iwi, hapū, and
Māori organisations with data as an ally of tangata whenua, and how he has channelled this experience to support his own communities through data-informed and technology-informed decision making. Sidney will highlight some of the benefits and risks of big data and machine learning approaches which he will illustrate with his current research focus on automatic hate speech detection on social media.
Personal Biography: Sidney Gig-Jan Wong 黃吉贊 (he/him, any pronouns with respect) is a community advocate and researcher from Ōtautahi (Christchurch). He grew up in Te Awakairangi ki Tai (Lower Hutt) and has ancestral links to Seyip Counties, Saamsui County, and Tungkwoon County. Sidney advocates for and supports LGBTQIA+ communities across Aotearoa through his role as chair of the Ethnic Rainbow Alliance and Qtopia. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Canterbury affiliated with the Geospatial Research Institute and the New Zealand Institute of Language Brain and Behaviour. Sidney is a recipient of the Fulbright Science and Innovation Graduate award and is undertaking his research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
