Poupou Karanga Wānanga on Chatham Islands

A mother and grandmother who completed the Poupou Karanga in 2013 had a goal in her whanau plan to bring the Poupou Karanga wānanga to the Chatham Islands. This dream was fulfilled in August 2014 as 18 women gathered for a weekend supported by 3 Tutors from Te Wānanga o Raukawa in an exciting weekend of learning, sharing, discovery, tears and joy. The learning included reflecting on places of significance on the island, remembering names, stories and loved ones passed on.

7 of the participants had completed whanau PATH plans in 2013 and this weekend was a fulfilment of one of their goals – to learn more about karanga, te reo, local stories and to grow confidence as a kaikaranga. The journey has begun and was a huge confidence booster for the women.

The women will regroup again in October for the next wānanga. Kia kaha wahine mā!
